Weimar: Guide

Weimar és una ciutat situada al land de Turíngia a la República Federal d'Alemanya amb 64.631 habitants. Es troba a la línia central de ciutats que conformen d'oest a est: Eisenach, Gotha, Erfurt, Weimar i Jena.

Weimar fou un dels grans centres culturals d'Europa, acollint genis com Bach, Goethe, Schiller i Herder que acudiren a la ciutat atrets pel prestigi cultural que havia assolit i pel finançament que dispensava la família ducal.

Ciutat capital de l'antic gran ducat ernestià de Saxònia-Weimar-Eisenach des del segle XVII fins l'any 1918. La ciutat cresqué gràcies a la cort gran ducal, que n'era l'autèntic motor de creixement, tant de la ciutat com dels seus voltants.

Fou la ciutat on es redactà la primera constitució democràtica d'Alemanya que donà lloc a la República de Weimar, tot i que la capital continuà sent Berlín.

Passà a formar part de la República Democràtica d'Alemanya caient a l'oblit i perdent gran part del seu brillant passat cultural. Des de 1988 i durant els dos següents anys la població de Weimar es veié reduïda en més de 4.000 persones (un 7%) com a conseqüència d'una intensa emigració a l'Oest. A partir de 1990 a diferència d'altres ciutats de Turíngia la població ha augmentat.

A partir de 1990 Weimar s'ha convertit en un magnífic aparador de les polítiques de restauració de cascs antics que la RFA fa a les antigues ciutats de l'Est. Actualment és un centre universitari, industrial i turístic.

La ciutat posseix un admirable casc històric que no fou tant maltractat com ho foren les veïnes ciutats de Dresden o Dessau. Entre els principals monuments que hi destaquen hi ha el Deutsches Nationaltheatre i el Palau gran ducal a més a més de la famosa biblioteca de Weimar que patí un incendi recentment i que està en vies de restauració trobant-se al Palau d'Anna Amàlia.
