Vílnius: Guide

Vílnius (en lituà Vilnius, en bielorús Вільня, en polonès Wilno, en rus Вильнюс i, abans, Вильно, en alemany Wilna) és la capital i la ciutat més important de Lituània, amb una població de més de 540.000 habitants el 2003. És també la capital de tres subdivisions administratives lituanes: el municipi de Vílnius, el districte municipal de Vílnius i el comtat de Vínius (9.760 km² i 850.700 hab.).

Geografia i població

Situada al sud-est del país, a la confluència dels rius Vilnia (també conegut com a Vilnelė) i Neris. Aquesta situació no central es pot atribuir a la forma canviant de les fronteres nacionals al llarg dels segles, ja que en un temps va ser el centre no només cultural sinó també geogràfic del Gran Ducat de Lituània, i en els seus orígens també fou el centre geogràfic de les terres lituanes, mentre que la població de la ciutat va romandre multiètnica durant la major part de la seva història.

Vílnius dista 312 km del mar Bàltica|Bàltic i de Klaipėda, el principal port marítim de Lituània. Les altres ciutats principals del país, com ara Kaunas (a 102 km), Šiauliai (a 214 km) i Panevėžys (a 135 km), són fàcilment accessibles des de la capital.

El municipi actual de Vílnius ocupa 402 km² i està edificat en un 20,2%, mentre que a la resta del territori hi predominen els espais verds (43,9%) i l'aigua (2,1%).

Segons el cens del 2001, el municipi comptava amb 542.287 habitants, el 57,8% dels quals eren Lituània|lituans, el 18,7% Polònia|polonesos, el 13,9% Rússia|russos i el 4,0% Bielorússia|bielorussos; la resta es declaraven d'altres nacionalitats o bé van refusar de respondre.

La Ciutat Vella

La Ciutat Vella o Senamiestis, el centre històric de Vílnius, és una de les més extenses d'Europa (3,6 km²) i és on es concentren els principals atractius de caràcter històric i cultural. Els edificis de la Ciutat Vella –n'hi ha vora 1.500– s'han construït al llarg de les diverses èpoques, amb la qual cosa constitueixen una esplèndida barreja d'estils arquitectònics ben diferents. Tot i que Vílnius sovint és considerada una ciutat barroca, també s'hi troben edificis gòtics, Renaixement|renaixentistes i d'altres estils.

Els principals llocs d'atracció turística de la ciutat són el castell de Gediminas i la plaça de la Catedral, símbols de la capital. Constitueixen també la porta d'entrada al centre històric de Vílnius, que es desenvolupa entorn de l'Ajuntament, unit amb el palau del Governador mitjançant l'artèria principal, el carrer Pilies.

Altres carrers serpentegen al voltant de palaus senyorials, esglésies, botigues i tallers artesanals. Els carrers, estrets i de forma corba, i els petits i curiosos patis i places es van desenvolupar segons la planificació radial de la Vílnius medieval.

A causa del seu caràcter únic, la Ciutat Vella de Vílnius fou declarada Patrimoni de la Humanitat per la UNESCO el 1994.

Economia

Vílnius és el principal centre econòmic de Lituània i un dels centres financers més importants dels estats bàltics. Tot i que només concentra el 15% de la població lituana, genera aproximadament el 35% del PIB del país. Segons aquests indicadors, el seu producte interior brut|PIB per càpita, basat en la paritat del poder adquisitiu, el 2005 era d'uns 27.500 euros per sobre de la mitjana de la Unió Europea.

Transports i comunicacions

Vílnius és el punt de partida de les autopista|autopistes Vílnius-Kaunas-Klaipėda i Vílnius-Panevėžys. Tot i que el riu Neris pot ser navegable, no hi ha rutes fluvials regulars. L'Aeroport Internacional de Vílnius canalitza la majoria dels vols internacionals lituans cap a la majoria de les principals destinacions europees. L'estació de ferrocarril de Vílnius també és un important nus viari. A la ciutat hi ha una xarxa de troleibusos i per a més endavant hi ha projectada una línia de tranvia.
