Varsòvia (en polonès Warszawa) és la ciutat més gran de Polònia i la seva capital a partir de l'any 1596, quan el rey Zygmund III va traslladar la capitalitat des de Cracòvia. Varsòvia és també la seu de la Presidència de la República, del Parlament i de la resta de les autoritats centrals.
La ciutat és la seu de nombroses indústries (manufactureres, de l'acer, d'enginyeria elèctrica, de l'automòbil, etc.) i comprèn 66 institucions d'estudis superiors (incloent-hi la Universitat de Varsòvia, la Universitat Tecnològica de Varsòvia, l'Escola Superior de Negocis i l'Acadèmia Mèdica) i més de 30 teatres que inclouen el Teatre Nacional, l'Òpera i l'Orquestra Filharmònica Nacional.

Està situada al centre del país, a la regió de Masòvia (n'és també la capital), a la riba del riu Vístula (Wisła), a uns 100 metres damunt el nivell de la mar i a uns 350 km tant de la costa del mar Bàltic com dels Càrpats.
Ocupa una superfície de 494,28 km2 i té 1,6 milions d'habitants (els varsovians).
Etimologia
El nom Warszawa ve del possessiu del nom Warsz, és a dir Warszewa, Warszowa. Segons les llegendes el nom ve d'un pescador pobre, Wars, i d'una sirena, Sawa.
Emblemes i colors
A partir de la segona meitat del segle XVII, l'emblema de la ciutat és una sirena amb
l'espasa i un escut a les mans, que representa la criatura que –segons les llegendes– ordenà fundar la ciutat.
